He asks some relevant questions about the trend towards medicating the self when perhaps one needs to work through issues of character. The effectiveness of Prozac, then the prototype of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, were quite dramatic, given that previously, psychiatrists were limited to tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, both of which had uncomfortable side effects. Prozac was thought to be safer and more effective. Then there were the reports of paradoxical reactions of increased depression and suicidal Ideations on some patients taking Prozac. Twenty years later, the FDA has mandated a black box warning about this in antidepressant information inserts.
