1 Leonard Weinglass Race for Justice Mumia Abu-Jamal's Fight Against the Death Penalty
Common Courage Press 1995 1567510701 / 9781567510706 Paperback Good+; Gently read book with slight lifting at the edges.
8.32 x 0.55 x 5.39; 272 pages; Mumia Abu-Jamal sits in a Philadelphia prison for the shooting of police officer Daniel Faulkner. Initially sentenced to death row, his sentence was commuted to life in prison in 2001. Abu-Jamal's case has incited vigorous arguments on both sides of the question, for and against the death penalty and in both national and international levels. This book was written by the chief defense counsel of his original trial pointing out inconsistencies in testimonie, poor investigation and alleges bias and discrimmination because of Abu-Jamal's vocal activism. A teenage member of the Black Panther and an eloquent journalist, against local and state politics, the defense argue that Abu-Jamal was convicted for his beliefs and activism. The prosecution argue that Daniel Faulkner was killed with Abu-Jamal's gun found on the scene with 5 spent casings, Abu-Jamal, himself having been shot on the scene by Faulkner. The controversy continues. In the meantime, Abu-Jamal remains a prolific writer and well sought out speaker via satellite in commencement exercises and lecture halls and the subject of music rap songs.

Mass Market PB; 0.50 x 4.25 x 7.0; 179 pages; I have kept this book because it was one of the first books to address the issue of the African American identity. I listened to the authors in a lecture in 1968 and became even more interested in the topic which is still relevant almost 40 years later. I hang on to the book butnow it is time to pass it on.
