1 Kazuo Ishiguro Remains of the Day
Alfred A. Knopf 1990 B000O86NUE Paperback Very Good with no dust jacket; Gently read, like new.
Trade PB; 0.50 x 8.25 x 5.50; 256 pages; Kazuo Ishiguro won the prestigious Booker award in 1989 for this third novel. It is written from the first person point of view of Stevens, loyal dignified butler of Darlington Hall. Remains of the day is a reminiscence of the events of the day, the events of one's life, or the end of an era. As Stevens new employer encourages him to take a holiday, Stevens looks back at his life through letters to someone, probably another butler. He reminisces on his relationship with his first employer, Lord Darlington, his life work as a butler how he conducted his duties with dignitiy and loyalty, and what could have been had he acknowledged the loving feelings he had for housekeeper, Miss Kenton. This classic is Ishiguro's first British novel that did not involve Japan.
