1 Peter D. Kramer Listening to Prozac A Psychiatrist Explores Antidepressant Drugs and the Remaking of the Self
Penguin 1993 0140159401 / 9780140159400 Paperback Fair; Used book with reading wear. Pages are foxing.
Trade PB; 1.0 x 7.0 x 5.0; 410 pages; Psychiatrist Peter Kramer wrote this book almost 15 years ago. He asks some relevant questions about the trend towards medicating the self when perhaps one needs to work through issues of character. The effectiveness of Prozac, then the prototype of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, were quite dramatic, given that previously, psychiatrists were limited to tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, both of which had uncomfortable side effects. Prozac was thought to be safer and more effective. Then there were the reports of paradoxical reactions of increased depression and suicidal Ideations on some patients taking Prozac. Twenty years later, the FDA has mandated a black box warning about this in antidepressant information inserts.
